Experimental Noise Recommendations

There's so much beauty to be found in experimental noise and sound art. I know it's not for everyone, but if you open your mind (and your ears, and your heart) and let go of everything you're conditioned to believe music should be and just LISTEN... noise can be a gloriously captivating thing.
From quiet hushed avant-garde neoclassical minimalism to strange yet intriguing field recordings to sheer walls of earsplitting harsh noise - sound itself as a concept is endlessly fascinating to me.

Here's a list of great album recommendations for all you noise lovers out there. You will find very little melody in these albums, and the melody you do find you may not find agreeable (lol) but this is undoubtedly incredible music that deserves a lot more love and attention than it gets.

Laura Cocks - Field Anatomies (2022)

GENRE : experimental, avant-garde, neoclassical, solo flute
RECORD LABEL : Carrier Records

Laura is an experimental solo flutist from New York and is the executive director of the TAK ensemble. This is her strange and fascinating debut solo album, focusing on the physicality and movements involved with playing the flute, as opposed to the actual notes and melodies. The performances on these songs range from strangled cries and quiet breathy whispers to fierce dissonant crescendos that sounds like someone pushing their entire physical being to the limits. The sounds that form as a result seem to dance between the notes being played, like they have a mind of their own.

These songs were written by a variety of composers to be specifically performed by Laura Cocks, who uses a variety of flutes, balloons, aluminum foil and bits of miscellaneous electronics and hardware to create this cathartic and captivating work of unique avant-garde brilliance.

The Creeping Man - Opportunistic Cannibal (2022)

GENRE : noise, dark ambient, drone, field recordings
RECORD LABEL : Veinte 33 Records

Dark, creepy and extremely unnerving... this is a horrific yet spellbinding noise album from The Creeping Man. Full of haunting sound collages and field recordings from old movies, ''educational'' documentaries and weird commercials/announcements, mixed in with ominous drones and hypnotic waves of atonal noise...this is a dark twisted noise trip for the willing sufferer. Great stuff.

Kate Carr - Resurfacing (2022)

GENRE : field recording, noise, drone, sound design
RECORD LABEL : Flaming Pines

In the middle of winter 2021, the amazingly talented sound artist Kate Carr decided to make a recording of the joiners resurfacing the road outside her London flat. As much as I want to scoff at the absurdity and ridiculousness of the whole idea... it actually makes for a really interesting and strangely hypnotic field recording. In this track you will hear the familiar roadwork sounds of heavy machinery, men yelling, hammers hammering, drills drilling and various other miscellaneous city sounds of varying frequencies and volumes. An absurdly fascinating listening experience.

Why would you listen to almost 18 minutes of roadworks? I don't know. Would I recommend it? Hell yeah! Kate Carr is also the owner of the Flaming Pines record label, which is a great label you should definitely check out if you're into all forms of weird and wonderful noises and experimental sound art.

Wound - Clinomania (2022)

GENRE : experimental, ambient, avant-garde, noise
RECORD LABEL : Wormhole World

Lose yourself in this grey blizzard of wonderful noise. Swirling distortions of abstract melancholy, torment, confusion, anger and despair. Malevolent and sinister, yet introspective and strangely serene. Wound creates these expansive soundscapes using mesmerizing synth pads, heavily-reverbed guitars, IDM-like glitchy electronics, and solemn piano - the chaos roars, the sadness whispers, and the beautiful ambience shimmers and glistens. This is an emotional and captivating atmospheric noise album.

The Pale Faced Family On The Hill & Oliver Coates - The Pale Faced Family On The Hill (2022)

GENRE : drone, dark ambient, noise, drone metal, Scotland
RECORD LABEL : Line Explorations

This is an interesting collaboration between a bunch of electronic producers and Scottish drone artist Oliver Coates. Recorded in a small church hall on the outskirts of London, this is a unique and esoteric mix of dark ambient electronica music, noisy earsplitting deep cello drones and manipulated weather recordings and vocal samples. The album is haunting,  unnerving and emotional. A dark wonderful unpredictable noise feast.

andPlay & Victoria Cheah - A Butterfly On Your Shoulder Into Years And Years To Come (2022)

GENRE : avant-garde, noise, sound art, field recordings, drone
RECORD LABEL : Dinzu Artefacts

Dinzu Artefacts release some of the most interesting field recordings (and visual aesthetics) on the planet, and specialize in limited edition runs of cassette tapes for these releases.

This album is a collaboration between experimental violin/viola duo andPlay and multi-disciplinary composer Victoria Cheah - both based in New York.
Side A consists of over 17 minutes of pure tension, created by the ebbs and flows of dissonant violin and viola working in tandem, almost as if they're competing towards some unknown finishing line. The result is painful and harsh, yet strangely beautiful and compelling.
Side B is 22 minutes of brutality and catharsis. The screeching and wailing of the strings reflect the torment of the mind, the torture of the spirit and the complexity of human emotions... before a (very) slight sweetness makes its way into sound, right towards the end. The slightest glimpse of sun leaking through a hole in a dungeon wall. A really rewarding album for the close attentive listener.

Black Ops - Ephemera (2022)

GENRE : noise, dark ambient, drone, field recordings, hauntology
RECORD LABEL : Anticipating Nowhere

Deep dark haunting soundscapes... black hypnagogic winds blowing through the recesses of the human brain, finding its way into all the various nooks and crannies. This psychological white noise (or should I say black noise?) is captivating and strangely relaxing, despite having some pretty disturbing moments in there. The intriguing sounds and textures of this album were created by manipulated field recordings. Highly recommended for dark immersive listening.

Anticipating Nowhere is a brilliant little netlabel that specializing in all kinds of experimental noises and hypnotic soundscapes. You should check out their Bandcamp page and their Mixcloud if you're seeking some strange atmospheric aural treats.

Gold - Miserere Mei, Deus (2022)

GENRE : harsh noise, drone, field recordings, electronica
RECORD LABEL : self-released

This is the newest release from the highly prolific noise artist Gold, who also releases music under his alternative moniker Carrion. If you're familiar with either (or both) of these projects, you'll be acquainted with his unapologetically long dark noise pieces and his haunting visual aesthetics.

The tone of this new album is particularly bleak and heavy. It hangs over you like a black cloud that's about to burst and rain down on you with a terrible wrath. The songs are comprised of strange and eerie field recordings of (what I gather to be) seagulls, public gatherings, street noises, radio transmissions, evangelical preachers and... Japanese porn? The field recordings and unsettling atonal static is broken up by fragments of twisted church hymnals and detuned string quartets. Awesome stuff.

Carrion - Coma (2021)

GENRE : harsh noise, drone, field recordings, dark ambient, industrial
RECORD LABEL : Gates of Hypnos

And here's an album from Gold's alternative moniker Carrion. It's an hour-long descent into the pits of misery, but holy hell it's an enjoyable ride. A hypnotic and haunting whirlwind of noise, subtly accompanied by melancholic melodies that slowly but surely eventually creep their way into the relentlessly bleak soundscape.

Gates of Hypnos are a record label that specialize in music like this - hypnotic walls of dark noise/drone/ambience to lose yourself in. You should take a browse through their Bandcamp page and find yourself something dark and wonderful to listen to.

SVR - Procession (2022)

GENRE : minimalistic drone, dark ambient, electronic, abstract, sound art
RECORD LABEL : self-released

Here's an album of dark monolithic drone music from Scotland. Ominous and austere, slow and haunting, abstract and slightly unnerving... this music is all about texture and mood. The songs require patience and time to unfold and unravel, but if you allow them to... they will slowly engulf you, and you'll love it.

I also really dig the visual aesthetics of this project. The concrete minimalism goes hand in hand with the music.

Disfigured Robot Child - Psychedelic Pyxicephalus (2022)

GENRE : harsh noise, noise, power electronics,
RECORD LABEL : MuteAnt Sounds

Oh my God, my fucking ears... listening to this album feels like having a jackhammer drill slowly but surely right through my skull, and penetrate into the pure goo that my brain has become. This music is a relentlessly violent and traumatic assault on the eardrums, and on the heart... yet it's a rather wonderful sonic accomplishment. Fans of Merzbow, Prurient and Cop Funeral will likely enjoy this. Definitely the kind of music to listen to when you find yourself angry, sad and alone.

Ambient/Drone Recommendations (May 2022)

Here's a list of wonderful ambient/drone albums that I've been enjoying lately and would highly recommend. Most of the awesome artists in this post are low-key and relatively (or completely) unknown, and they deserve our support.

We all know at this point that Bandcamp isn't perfect... but they're still BY FAR the best digital music platform to directly support independent artists.

If you have time, please check out my other general non-genre specific list of Bandcamp Friday recommendations that I published today.

Rafael Anton Irisarri - Peripeteia (2020)

GENRE : dark ambient, modern classical, drone, electronica
RECORD LABEL : Dais Records

I might as well begin with one of my all-time favourite ambient artists, and in my opinion one of the very best in the game. Sweeping is the word I'd use to describe this album. Irisarri creates these enormous dark sweeping soundscapes that completely wash over you and envelope you, and this is one of his best. A proper emotional catharsis of an album.

Enmarta - The Hermit (2016)

GENRE : dark ambient, drone, gloom, soundscapes, field recordings, violin
RECORD LABEL : Cryo Chamber

Here's a haunting atmospheric gem of an album from the wonderful Swedish record label Cryo Chamber. Dark gloomy atmospheres and cinematic soundscapes made from layered drones, electro-acoustic instrumentation, field recordings and beautiful sweeping violins. Ideal for late night listening.

The Lonely Bell - s/t (2015)

GENRE : dark ambient, drone, noise, ethereal, post rock, Scotland
RECORD LABEL : Dead Forest Records

Intensely introspective and mesmerizing dark ambient/drone music from a cold wet Scottish island. This album sounds like it came from the depths of isolation, solitude and depression. The closing track in particular sounds like the end of life on earth. Beautiful stuff.

Marine Eyes - idyll (2021)

GENRE : ambient, new age, experimental, field recordings
RECORD LABEL : Stereoscenic Records

Marine Eyes is the solo ambient project of Cynthia Bernard. In this album she has created a gentle peaceful place for weary troubled souls to stop what they're doing and allow themselves to breathe deeply and heal for a while. Bernard uses mostly vocal ambience, nature samples and heavily effected guitars to make these wonderful expansive soundscapes that relaxes, heals and elevates the listener to a higher gentler dreamier plane of existence. A truly beautiful album from a super talented ambient musician. Perfect music for lying on the grass and watching clouds softly drift by...

Carrion - Her (2022)

GENRE : ambient, dark ambient, experimental, field recordings
RECORD LABEL : Veinte 33 Records

Do yourself a favour and immerse yourself in this soft dreamy 15-minute long ethereal ambient piece by Carrion. It feels like being at the top of a lonely hill at the dawning of the day when the world is only half awake, as the sun slowly rises soft and golden and birds begin to chirp their sweet morning songs in the distance, and you quietly reflect upon all of life's loves and losses.

Viente33 has a lot of great ambient releases on their label. You should take a good snoop through their Bandcamp catalogue.

The Gateless Gate - Hinterlands (2022)

GENRE : ambient, new age, drone, electronica, soundscapes
RECORD LABEL : self-released

This is a gorgeous dreamy journey of an album that I can't get enough of. In this inspired project, The Gateless Gate has named each sweeping ambient piece after place names in the books of fantasy giants Le Guin, Tolkien, Lewis & Moorcock. The music is sprawling and majestic, immersive and engulfing... it shimmers and swells and sweeps across your consciousness, transporting the listener to beautiful unknown lands.

Barley & Blush To The Snow - Aura (2022)

GENRE : ambient, dub techno, downtempo, electronica
RECORD LABEL : Not Yet Remembered Records

Stunning airier than air ambient dub techno music from a collaborative duo of whom I know nothing about. What I do know is that you probably need this album in your life. This is great music to brush away the cobwebs.

Technically I haven't heard the full album yet because it officially comes out tomorrow (05/06/22) but the 3 preview songs are incredible. I can't wait to hear the rest. And while you're at it, check out the other wonderful releases on the Not Yet Remembered Records Bandcamp page. They have such a beautiful eclectic array of ambient/noise/drone releases on their label.

Vapour Night - The Dirt Sea (2014)

GENRE : dark ambient, drone, noise, Scotland
RECORD LABEL : Dead Forest Records

This is one 25-minute long bleak ambient/drone/noise piece that feels like being caught out in an apocalyptic storm at the edge of the world. Dark engulfing drone music at its best.

As the music blog Fucked By Noise described it : ''a journey through largely grey and ambiguous landscapes, with little room for light''

Hawaiianvest - Chasms (2021)

GENRE : abstract, ambient, dark ambient, experimental, avant-garde
RECORD LABEL : No Thank You Recordings

This album is mental. It's actually very difficult to describe...it's basically an abstract dark ambient album, made up of  haunting drones and hypnotic pulses, and creepy disturbing psychedelic spoken word sections about black holes, alternate universes, dark sexual perversions and serial killers. Total batshit crazy, but I love it.

Diamondstein - Asleep In The Creek (2021)

GENRE : electronica, ambient, techno, vaporwave
RECORD LABEL : Doom Trip Records

Hazy vaporous ambient techno music for dark lonely wanderings through deserted city streets at night. Asleep In The Creek is the two-part collaborative project of composer/musician Diamonstein and photographer Kait Fischer. I am totally enraptured by the ethereal beauty of this double-part release, both musically and visually.

Seetcya - Bleakscapes (2011)

GENRE : dark ambient, doom ambient, gothic, experimental, Germany
RECORD LABEL : Essentia Mundi Records

This album is exactly as the title suggests - bleak, haunting, doom laden ambient music from the darkest depths. It's abstract and minimalistic, with very little melody to be found anywhere... but it really sucks you in a refuses to let you go.

Best Underground Shoegaze/Dream Pop

Shoegaze and Dream Pop tend to go hand in hand. You could argue that they're basically the same thing. Anyway, I decided to dedicate this post to some of the best modern Shoegaze and Dream Pop albums from underground acts that most people likely aren't aware of.

Everyone knows The Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Slowdive, Ride, Swervedriver, Lush, etc... and for good reason. They're the original Shoegaze/Dream Pop bands that created and launched the wonderful genre, and they're all incredible bands that you should definitely check out, if you haven't already...

This is just a list of ten of my personal favourite underground modern Shoegaze/Dream Pop albums (in no particular order) that all seem to exist on the fringes (or completely outside) the popular circles of all things noisy and beautiful.

Be Forest - Knocturne (2019)

This is a dark psychadelic post-punk album from Italian band Be Forest. It's stark, hazy, raw and mesmerizing. Ethereal vocals, heavily-effected guitars, haunting basslines and thundering drums create these dark swirling vaporous atmospheres that not only captivate you - they completely swallow you up. Sick album.

Blankenberge - Everything (2021)

Blankenberge are a fuzzy shoegazey post-rock band from St.Petersburg, Russia. Their sound is somehow both soft and noisy at the same time - beautiful serene vocals drifting in the midst of a dreamy haze of melodic reverb-drenched noise. Some songs are slow and brooding, others are delivered with a faster punk rock energy.  Overall, this is a wonderful shoegaze album to lose yourself in.

---

Vapour Night - Snow Fled (2015)

Vapour Night is a dark noisy pop project from a small island in the north of Scotland. 'Snow Fled' is a cold dark winter journey into the abyss. The songs are dark, melancholy and lonely... yet sweeping and beautiful.
There's lots of different musical elements going on in this album - dark post-punky guitars, bittersweet dream pop, ferocious noise rock, cold ambience, mournful electronica, sheer walls of glorious noise, and haunting vocals that cut beautifully through the mix.

Plus there's a rare guest vocal from the mysterious Sun Devoured Earth who seems to have disappeared into obscurity after doing this.

---

You'll Never Get To Heaven - Adorn (2014)

A wonderful album from Canadian dream-pop duo You'll Never Get To Heaven. Celestial, ethereal, airy and sweetly melodic music that seriously wouldn't be out of place in Twin Peaks
This short album consists of only six songs - five originals and one beautiful rendition of Brian Eno's 'By This River'. Great album from a great band.

---

Pia Fraus - Now You Know It Still Feels The Same (2021)

Pia Fraus are an awesome jangly noise pop band from Estonia. This album was recorded when they were only sixteen years old! Gorgeous female/male vocal harmonies backed with bright sparkly guitar pop instrumentation that shimmers and glows with a fresh dreaminess and buoyancy often lacking in a lot of shoegaze-influenced bands. This is the only album of theirs I've heard, but it's excellent, and I look forward to hearing the rest.

---

Teen Daze - Glacier (2013)

Here's an electronic ambient pop album from Canadian solo artist/musician Teen Daze. Often referred to as ''chillwave'', Teen Daze uses layers of ethereal synthesized sounds to create these sweeping autumnal atmospheres that drift and swirl beautifully into your ears and through your brain. Listening to this album from start to finish feels like sleepwalking across a frozen expanse...in a good way.

---

Sun Devoured Earth - Sounds of Desolation (2012)

Sun Devoured Earth is the solo project of Vadim Vasilyev - a Latvian bedroom artist/musician. He modestly describes his own music as ''a no budget take on shoegaze with other genres mixed in here and there''. Don't let that put you off. Yes, this music is very homemade and raw...but it sounds huge. He creates dark guitar-driven walls of noise and barely decipherable vocals over cheap programmed drum beats. The end result is bleak and depressive, yet beautiful.

Sun Devoured Earth gained quite a substantial cult following in the years that he was prolifically releasing music, but he seems to have disappeared into obscurity since his last album in 2013. I have no idea what he's doing these days.

---

Jane Woodman - Teenage Red (2013)

Jane Woodman is a darkwave electronic artist from San Francisco. I originally discovered her through a guest vocal she did on the self-titled Vapour Night album. She's a mega-talented musician that expertly mixes gothic post-punk with dark shoegazey electronica. The music is sometimes abstract, sometimes hooky and melodic... but always massive and cinematic sounding. This is her only full-length album to date. It's a long dark romantic journey through an ambiguous apocalyptic landscape.

---

Hearts of Black Science - The Ghost You Left Behind (2007)

Hearts of Black Science are a dark electronic gothic-rock from Gothenburg, Sweden. This is their wonderful debut album. There's an airiness and weightlessness to their sound that conjures up images of softly falling snow on rooftops and lonely city streets at night. A beautiful combination of hooky electro-pop and dark broody gothic shoegaze. Excellent stuff.

---

Crescendo - Unless (2016)

LA quintet Crescendo make bright nostalgic shoegaze delivered with a striking emotional intensity and upbeat punk energy. Their glorious pop melodies and jangly instrumentation make these songs so sparkly and crisp, and a pure joy to listen to. According to an article I read about them, one of their goals is to inspire listeners to dance and disappear from reality via space travel.

Kevin Shields - 2 (La La La Human Steps) *rare song

GENRE : shoegaze, noise, ethereal, dream pop, experimental pop

RECORD LABEL : unknown

For all you shoegazers out there - this song was part of a collaboration Kevin Shields did with the Canadian contemporary dance company La La La Human Steps, simply titled '2'. Beautiful, noisy, majestic, shimmering shoegaze-y goodness from one of the true masters of his field.

For those who don't know, Kevin Shields is the lead singer/guitarist of legendary shoegaze rock band My Bloody Valentine. If you haven't checked them out, you seriously need to.

Cop Funeral - Pain (2021)

GENRE : harsh noise, noise, experimental, electronic, industrial
RECORD LABEL : Already Dead Tapes & Records

Cop Funeral is the dark noise music project of Joshua Tabbia, who also runs the quirky and amazing record label Already Dead Tapes & Records. This is his second album, and it's not for the faint of heart. It's dark, brutal, unnerving...and brilliant.

As it states on the Bandcamp page, ''Nothing represented here is the soundtrack to one's daily activities. No, this is what it sounds like to escape the social structure, either by transcending it or destroying it.'' I couldn't agree more. It's bleak and painful, but it's also a cathartic and rewarding listening experience. Even though I would definitely file this under ''harsh noise'', it's definitely not a one-dimensional album...there's strangely calm and tranquil moments throughout. There's even saxophone on one of the songs, and some mellow abstract electronic interludes. Awesome stuff. Fans of Prurient and Merzbow would very likely dig this.

Monte Burrows - The Concentration of Brown Owls (2016)

GENRE : avant-garde, experimental, field recordings, ambient, drone, noise
RECORD LABEL : Dinzu Artefacts

Dinzu Artefacts have some of the most pleasing visual aesthetics of any record label I know. Their cassette tape artworks are simply gorgeous. Musically... ''Dinzu Artefacts is focused on the contemporary art of sound by musicians interested in experimental practices, modern composition, improvised music, noise and field recordings''. I plan on gradually making my way through all their releases in time, but for now let's start than from the beginning...

This album by Monte Burrows was the first release on Dinzu Artefacts. It's an odd but beautiful amalgamation of birdsong, nature sounds, mechanical drones, industrial noises, and even a bit of gorgeous neo-classical piano thrown into the mix. A great release from a great record label. I look forward to investigating more.

Mollbury Medical Research Centre - The D7 Project (2022)

GENRE : experimental, avant-garde, noise, drone, sci-fi, ambient, medical science
RECORD LABEL : self-released

This is one of the most disturbing and unsettling albums I've ever listened to. What scares me most is what's NOT being said here. It's what is possibly implied by the song titles/sounds/atmospheres that really disturb me.

I don't know what Mollbury Medical Research Centre is exactly, and I don't think I want to know... but artistically it's an experimental, avant-garde, dark ambient drone project with all kinds of eerie unsettling futuristic sci-fi soundscapes mixed with creepy field recordings. And it's f**king awesome.

Hakobune - Evergreen/Faraway (2017)

GENRE : Japan, ambient, experimental, noise, drone, ethereal
RECORD LABEL : self-released

Hakobune is the musical project of Takahiro Yorifuji from Hyogo, Japan. He making stunning guitar-based ambient music, and has an incredibly large discography. 'Evergreen/Faraway' is the only release of his that I've listened to so far, and it's a killer. Ideal ethereal ambient music for reading, studying, meditating, getting high or just thinking...

Grouper - Shade (2021)

GENRE : experimental pop, ambient, singer-songwriter, noise, drone
RECORD LABEL : Kranky

Grouper is the music project of experimental songwriter/musician Liz Harris. Her latest release is 'Shade', and it's my personal favourite work of hers to date. Beautiful, bare, stripped-down, sleepy, introspective folk music mixed with tape loops and ambient noise experimentations. It's almost unbearably raw and intimate, with room sounds, squeaky fret noises and owls hooting in the background. I personally hope she releases more albums like this.
