Ambient/Drone Recommendations (June 22)

I've compiled another list of great ambient/drone recommendations for you all....

---

Galya Bisengalieva - Aralkum (2020)

GENRE : modern classical, ambient, drone, electronica
RECORD LABEL : One Little Independent Records

Galya Bisengalieva is a Kazakh-British modern classical composer/violinist who has collaborated with a bunch of famous musicians (including Thom Yorke and Frank Ocean) and is currently the leader of The London Symphony Orchestra.
This is her debut solo album. It's a concept album about the tragic and devastating shrinking of The Aral Sea in Central Asia. Satellite images have shown that the Eastern basin has completely dried up, and is now sadly referred to as The Aralkum Desert.

The music is dark, dramatic and expansive...like the visible ecological disaster that's threatening this large beautiful body of water. Sad yearning violin parts ebb and flow over a rich haunting sea of slow brooding ambient electronica. The musical elements that comprise these compelling soundscapes are a mixture of atmospheric electroacoustic classical instrumentation (strings, contrabass flute), rumbling downtempo beats, saturated ambient textures, field recordings and minimalistic (often glitchy) electronica that are often playing out in strange conflicting rhythms.

This album is a vast and pensive journey from start to finish. If you relax and allow yourself to get immersed in this haunting and murky oceanic ambience, your patience will be rewarded tenfold. Great album.

Leena Lee & Vania Fortuna - Niebla (2022)

GENRE : experimental, sound art, ambient, field recordings, Mexico
RECORD LABEL : Flaming Pines

This is a wonderful sonic study/meditation on the quetzel bird. The quetzal bird is the sacred bird of the ancient Mayas and Aztecs, and is currently the national emblem of Guatemala. They are an important part of the cloud forest ecosystem and are in danger of extinction.

In this beautiful and inspired project, the collaborative duo of sound artist/researcher/teacher Leena Lee and vocalist Vania Fortuna (both from Niebla, Mexico) decided to do a sonic exploration of the deep entanglement and connection between ourselves as human beings and the natural world. They have used sound, field recordings and the human voice to specifically explore the listening and composing practices of women, while heightening and spreading ecological awareness.

This is an emotional, spiritual and deeply immersive album of quiet melodies, subtle whispers, glistening ambience, misty soundscapes and slow manifestations of human emotion. It is the reflection of a magical place, and the human and non-human relationships that naturally co-exist there. This music is intimate and alluring, patient and complex...and beautifully rewarding. Highly recommended.

Jeannine Schulz - Luminous (2021)

GENRE : ambient, soundscape, post rock, neoclassical
RECORD LABEL : Polar Seas Recordings

Mournful and muted notes rise and fall, backwards and forwards within this shimmering sea of fragile audio hiss. The frequencies dance and mingle with each other - sometimes swelling to majestic heights, other times disintegrating and dissipating entirely...

German artist/musician Jeannine Schulz has created an album of beautiful grey undulating dreamscapes using minimalistic instrumentation. Sweeping and pulsing synthesizers are mixed with slow sorrowful post-rock guitars, executed with a wonderful subtlety and finesse, allowing the emptiness to breathe... Great album.

Thomas Ragsdale - Sonder (2019)

GENRE : ambient, dark ambient, techno, electronica, soundscape
RECORD LABEL : Soundtracking The Void

Thomas Ragsdale is a musician/composer from Yorkshire that specializes in a wide range of cinematic electronica and atmospheric techno. In this album he has created stunning widescreen colour-drained soundscapes that feels like you're being sucked into long grey windy tunnels, not knowing what kind of a world you're going to emerge into at the other end. The rich textures, the intricate sound design and the deep trance-inducing atmospheres of these four long pieces are dark, chilling and wonderfully captivating.

This is the first album I've listened to of his, and I'm really looking forward to checking out more. Incredible stuff.

Sangam - Hope You Don't Leave (2022)

GENRE : dark ambient, dark electronica, dystopian, dreampunk
RECORD LABEL : Decaying Spheres

Here's a beautiful dark downtempo electronic ambient album from Manchester artist/producer Sangam. As the album title and song names suggest - it's a musical portrayal of heartbreak, longing, regret, anger and grief.

Press play and let the dystopian soundscapes and swelling waves of electronic sadness wash over you and engulf you entirely. Though the music itself is very synthetic, the sorrow and heartache conveyed within the sound is very organic and real. These songs clutch at your heart and squeeze tightly, and it feels absolutely blissful.
Perfect music for night time walks in the pouring rain, wallowing in your own emotional pain and suffering...or simply just sitting around, staring out a window, reflecting on what could have been...

Decaying Spheres are a fantastic little record label that release all kinds of dark dramatic ambient goodness - both digitally and on limited edition cassette tapes. If you like this album, you should definitely check out the rest of their releases.

Euan Dalgarno - Swimitrupl (2022)

GENRE : modern classical, cinematic, experimental, IDM, dark ambient
RECORD LABEL : Not Yet Remembered

Here's a beautiful and unique modern classical album from Edinburgh-based musician/composer Euan Dalgarno - the latest signing to the wonderful Not Yet Remembered record label.

Right from the opening notes, this music twists and circles and soars like strange magical birds over quiet secluded forests that have been undisturbed by human beings for a long time. This album is very rhythmic yet soothing, triumphant yet haunting... a wondrous whirlpool of unpredictable yet infectious rhythms, playful wind instruments, sweeping string sections, glitchy IDM and beautiful choral voices that ebb and flow with a powerful yet subtle majesty.
The repetitive and additive rhythms and structures are slightly reminiscent of Phillip Glass or Steve Reich, whilst also having the soaring crescendos and sensibilities of more contemporary acts like Sigur Ros, Radiohead and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Great album.

(I wasn't too sure whether to include this one in this recommendations list, given that it's definitely more modern classical than ambient/drone...but it's close enough! Not going to overthink it.)

Andy Cartwright - Form Less Ness (2022)

GENRE : ambient, minimalist, sound art, experimental
RECORD LABEL : A Quiet Room

Here's a beautiful work of ethereal fluidity. This music is both melodic and abstract, dancing formlessly and fragile in its own aqueous soundscape. It splashes and gurgles like water in a ghostly container, whilst whispering and howling like air in some sort of otherworldly ventilation duct.
The original source material for the sounds Cartwright creates is ambiguous and pretty much unrecognizable (at least to my ears), but from doing a bit of my own research I discovered that the album contains personal field recordings captured during trips to the Alps and Nepal. Very interesting.

As the Bandcamp blurb states, this music balances on the verge between ambient music and sound art. Whilst undoubtedly abstract and formless, it's melodic and soothing enough to be enjoyed as a dreamy ambient album, in all its strange delightful vulnerability. Awesome stuff.

Autumna - Linden Home Range (2021)

GENRE : ambient, minimalist, electronica, field recordings, musique concrete
RECORD LABEL : Shady Ridge Records

Shady Ridge Records consistently serve up splendid aural treats, and here's a great example of beautiful ambient splendor. Autumna self-describes this album as a sound diary of a 3-week holiday in the South of France, and an analogy of the relationship between a visitor and his surroundings.

This music is full of peaceful reflections and fragmented glimpses into the unspoiled beauty of the natural world, and all its hidden places. The tranquil ambience, nature recordings and pastoral sound collages that comprise these 8 tracks tell us stories of serenity and escape. It brings to mind images of still waters, sweet birdsong and majestic open spaces... this album is a great getaway from the stresses and worries of everyday existence, and such a joyful listening experience.

Veryan - Hiraeth EP (2020)

GENRE : electronica, ambient electronica, dark ambient, downtempo, shoegaze
RECORD LABEL : self-released

Here's a spectacular dark little EP from Scottish electronica musician Veryan. It's aptly named 'Hiraeth' - a mysterious and evocative Welsh word that has no English equivalent, but likens it to a feeling of homesickness/nostalgia tinged with grief and sadness over the lost or departed, which includes a ''home'' you can never return to...

However anyone wants to define the word 'Hiraeth' -  Veryan successfully manages to encapsulate and convey her own musical interpretation of this ambiguous feeling in the four songs that comprise this stunning little EP. It's a short but wondrous journey through the dark lonely tunnels of the human heart. Veryan combines cold cinematic electronica, dark ambience, ethereal shoegaze and sparse post-rock guitars to create these rich expansive beautiful soundscapes.

This is the perfect soundtrack to a lonely night drive, or a winter walk across a frozen expanse, or simply indulging in some intense introspection. This music speaks loudly to those who are lost and slowly learning to let go of a past that may have never even existed in the first place....

Bipolar Explorer - Forests, Voices, Coastlines, Dreams...(2021)

GENRE : experimental, post-rock, dark ambient, shoegaze
RECORD LABEL : Slugg Records

It's time to close your eyes, open your heart and allow yourself to indulge in this gorgeous swirl of spellbinding psychedelic ambience. Mesmerizing voices and atmospheric guitars emerging from the depths of misty forests and the heights of darkened mountaintops amidst the pulsing of ominous drones, nature recordings and hypnotic swells of both organic and synthesized noise.
As the title of the album suggests - this is the sonic interweaving of nature, human emotion and the metaphysical. A glorious head trip of post-rock psychedelia, hallucinatory English/French poetry, dreamy ambience and deeply immersive noisy soundscapes.

Something I really admire and respect is the guitar player's discipline and restraint throughout this entire album. His minimalistic use of simple tremolo'd chords and feedbacking loops of noise are powerful and alluring and atmospheric. It complements the mood of this music perfectly. The playing and tone kind of reminds of David Roback (Mazzy Star), heard in a completely different context. All the instrumentation and vocals on this album are wonderful and executed with such intelligence and finesse.

This music requires a lot patience... but it's such a rewarding and satisfying listening experience, if you give it the space and time it deserves.

Ninth Sign - Presence (2022)

GENRE : ambient, drone, meditative, ethereal, electronic
RECORD LABEL : self-released

Wordless mantras, slow breaths, deep quiet meditations on the present... Not much happens in this album, and you don't want it to. As soon as you click play, you realize within seconds that you've found a beautiful place - a sanctuary of wonderful stillness and tranquility. This music is all about savoring the moment, and giving your whole self to the here and now...

This album of lush beautiful ambient/drone music helps forget our past mistakes and future fears. Ninth Sign has created these glistening dreamscapes that forces the listener to slow down, breathe deeply and make the best of the present moment - something we all need to do more often. Lovely album.

So many of us have been facing immense mental challenges and emotional difficulties over these past couple of years. In times like these we need to reach out and help each other, as well as taking some much needed time and space to breathe deeply and heal.
I loved the idea of this compilation album before I even heard a single note of it, and now that I've finally heard it - it does not disappoint in any way. It's a beautiful and soothing journey that takes the listener to a safe gentle place of healing and self-discovery.

Read the PITP mission statement and all the individual song descriptions from the artists at the Bandcamp link below. A huge congratulations to all those involved with this compilation. You did a phenomenal job.

Ambient/Drone Recommendations (May 2022)

Here's a list of wonderful ambient/drone albums that I've been enjoying lately and would highly recommend. Most of the awesome artists in this post are low-key and relatively (or completely) unknown, and they deserve our support.

We all know at this point that Bandcamp isn't perfect... but they're still BY FAR the best digital music platform to directly support independent artists.

If you have time, please check out my other general non-genre specific list of Bandcamp Friday recommendations that I published today.

Rafael Anton Irisarri - Peripeteia (2020)

GENRE : dark ambient, modern classical, drone, electronica
RECORD LABEL : Dais Records

I might as well begin with one of my all-time favourite ambient artists, and in my opinion one of the very best in the game. Sweeping is the word I'd use to describe this album. Irisarri creates these enormous dark sweeping soundscapes that completely wash over you and envelope you, and this is one of his best. A proper emotional catharsis of an album.

Enmarta - The Hermit (2016)

GENRE : dark ambient, drone, gloom, soundscapes, field recordings, violin
RECORD LABEL : Cryo Chamber

Here's a haunting atmospheric gem of an album from the wonderful Swedish record label Cryo Chamber. Dark gloomy atmospheres and cinematic soundscapes made from layered drones, electro-acoustic instrumentation, field recordings and beautiful sweeping violins. Ideal for late night listening.

The Lonely Bell - s/t (2015)

GENRE : dark ambient, drone, noise, ethereal, post rock, Scotland
RECORD LABEL : Dead Forest Records

Intensely introspective and mesmerizing dark ambient/drone music from a cold wet Scottish island. This album sounds like it came from the depths of isolation, solitude and depression. The closing track in particular sounds like the end of life on earth. Beautiful stuff.

Marine Eyes - idyll (2021)

GENRE : ambient, new age, experimental, field recordings
RECORD LABEL : Stereoscenic Records

Marine Eyes is the solo ambient project of Cynthia Bernard. In this album she has created a gentle peaceful place for weary troubled souls to stop what they're doing and allow themselves to breathe deeply and heal for a while. Bernard uses mostly vocal ambience, nature samples and heavily effected guitars to make these wonderful expansive soundscapes that relaxes, heals and elevates the listener to a higher gentler dreamier plane of existence. A truly beautiful album from a super talented ambient musician. Perfect music for lying on the grass and watching clouds softly drift by...

Carrion - Her (2022)

GENRE : ambient, dark ambient, experimental, field recordings
RECORD LABEL : Veinte 33 Records

Do yourself a favour and immerse yourself in this soft dreamy 15-minute long ethereal ambient piece by Carrion. It feels like being at the top of a lonely hill at the dawning of the day when the world is only half awake, as the sun slowly rises soft and golden and birds begin to chirp their sweet morning songs in the distance, and you quietly reflect upon all of life's loves and losses.

Viente33 has a lot of great ambient releases on their label. You should take a good snoop through their Bandcamp catalogue.

The Gateless Gate - Hinterlands (2022)

GENRE : ambient, new age, drone, electronica, soundscapes
RECORD LABEL : self-released

This is a gorgeous dreamy journey of an album that I can't get enough of. In this inspired project, The Gateless Gate has named each sweeping ambient piece after place names in the books of fantasy giants Le Guin, Tolkien, Lewis & Moorcock. The music is sprawling and majestic, immersive and engulfing... it shimmers and swells and sweeps across your consciousness, transporting the listener to beautiful unknown lands.

Barley & Blush To The Snow - Aura (2022)

GENRE : ambient, dub techno, downtempo, electronica
RECORD LABEL : Not Yet Remembered Records

Stunning airier than air ambient dub techno music from a collaborative duo of whom I know nothing about. What I do know is that you probably need this album in your life. This is great music to brush away the cobwebs.

Technically I haven't heard the full album yet because it officially comes out tomorrow (05/06/22) but the 3 preview songs are incredible. I can't wait to hear the rest. And while you're at it, check out the other wonderful releases on the Not Yet Remembered Records Bandcamp page. They have such a beautiful eclectic array of ambient/noise/drone releases on their label.

Vapour Night - The Dirt Sea (2014)

GENRE : dark ambient, drone, noise, Scotland
RECORD LABEL : Dead Forest Records

This is one 25-minute long bleak ambient/drone/noise piece that feels like being caught out in an apocalyptic storm at the edge of the world. Dark engulfing drone music at its best.

As the music blog Fucked By Noise described it : ''a journey through largely grey and ambiguous landscapes, with little room for light''

Hawaiianvest - Chasms (2021)

GENRE : abstract, ambient, dark ambient, experimental, avant-garde
RECORD LABEL : No Thank You Recordings

This album is mental. It's actually very difficult to describe...it's basically an abstract dark ambient album, made up of  haunting drones and hypnotic pulses, and creepy disturbing psychedelic spoken word sections about black holes, alternate universes, dark sexual perversions and serial killers. Total batshit crazy, but I love it.

Diamondstein - Asleep In The Creek (2021)

GENRE : electronica, ambient, techno, vaporwave
RECORD LABEL : Doom Trip Records

Hazy vaporous ambient techno music for dark lonely wanderings through deserted city streets at night. Asleep In The Creek is the two-part collaborative project of composer/musician Diamonstein and photographer Kait Fischer. I am totally enraptured by the ethereal beauty of this double-part release, both musically and visually.

Seetcya - Bleakscapes (2011)

GENRE : dark ambient, doom ambient, gothic, experimental, Germany
RECORD LABEL : Essentia Mundi Records

This album is exactly as the title suggests - bleak, haunting, doom laden ambient music from the darkest depths. It's abstract and minimalistic, with very little melody to be found anywhere... but it really sucks you in a refuses to let you go.

NEST: A Compilation Supporting Trans Youth and Their Families (No Thank You Recordings 2022)

GENRE : experimental, abstract, ambient, field recordings, avant-garde
RECORD LABEL : No Thank You Recordings

No Thank You Recordings have one of the best Bandcamp bios I've ever read - ''a place for ambient/avant-garde/experimental/field recording artists to share pieces they really believe in and to which others have No'' . I love it.

No Thank You Recordings are an ambient/experimental/field recordings label, and this is their recently released charity compilation to help raise funds to support trans kids and their families through the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund - www.transgenderlegal.org. You can read their full mission statement at the Bandcamp link below...

I must say...the quality of music on this compilation is pretty damn incredible. The compilation consists of 32 tracks of wonderful (mostly) ambient/noise music from artists I've never heard of. There's a huge range of styles and moods throughout the songs, and it never gets boring or predictable.
The songs range from the abstract & atonal to the melodic & dreamy to the disturbing & creepy to the harsh & painful to just all-out weird as f**k... but the album as a whole is a joy to listen to, from beginning to end. There's lots of cool surprises in there, even a couple of pop songs and a vapourwave song!

I highly recommend you check this out. Ideally I'd like to have posted this on Bandcamp Friday...but I was super busy that day, and I wanted to actually listen to the music before writing anything about it.

---

Some of my own personal highlights...

Solo1 - Sunland Drive No.2
The delightful swirling melancholic opening track of the compilation. It's quite Lynchian actually.

Mollbury Medical Research Centre - We Have Established Communication
I did a write-up for the debut MMRC album here a couple of months ago. Very disturbing and unsettling dark ambient/drone music.

TABBY - Love Processing
A glorious electronic ambient track. It feels like being sucked up into the stars.

Cyparissus - fibi
Gorgeous birdsong. Sometimes that's all you need to hear.

Infrasubcontra - Verdant Slant
Slow dark cinematic drone music composed from tubas, pedals and synths.

Harry Towell & Guy Gelem - Restful Spaces (2022)

GENRE : modern classical, ambient, minimalist, neoclassical,
RECORD LABEL : Polar Seas Recordings

This is a long distance collaboration of two musical composers and fathers to be - sound artist/musician Harry Towell (aka Spheruleus) from the UK and cellist/musician Guy Gerem from Israeli. They created this album while expecting the arrival of their respective daughters, Emily and Neta. Their aim was to create a restful listening space for their children, and in doing so have created one for adult listeners too. This is a restful listening space for lovers of all things peaceful and ambient.

These beautiful gentle lullabies are a wonderful remedy to the current state of this world. Our lives are so noisy and frantic and busy, and there's so much cruelty and hatred all around us... it's so lovely and comforting to be able to slow down, kick back and immerse ourselves in Towell & Gelem's gorgeous aural world.
There's a delicate child-like playfulness to the shimmering ambience of these pieces. The instrumentation plucks and tinkles and chimes away to the backdrop of birdsong and other miscellanous field samples, while the cello soars and swells over it all in such a yearning and wistful way. A beautiful album for a not-so-beautiful time.

If you like this album, you should have a browse through the Polar Seas Recordings back catalogue of releases on their Bandcamp page. Lots of stunning releases in there.

Stefán Hafsteinsson – Heima EP (2021)

GENRE : neo classical, modern classical, instrumental piano, ambient, electronic, Iceland
RECORD LABEL : Moderna Records

Here's a beautiful little EP by Icelandic composer/pianist Stefán Hafsteinsson. It's short and delicate, yet powerful and heartbreaking. These four instrumental piano pieces are generally minimalistic. The piano playing is gentle and beautiful, and accompanied by cold ambient electronics and a soaring yet understated string section. This EP feels like seeing a distant beacon of light, welcoming you in after you've spent far too long, lost and alone, away from everything you love.  Another great release by Moderna Records.

Oh yeah, I absolutely adore the EP artwork too. It perfectly complements the music. It's a painting called 'Half Light' by Eva Ullrich. Splendid.

Menthol - Decade: Remastered and Resequenced (2021)

GENRE : vaporwave, ambient, electronica, shoegaze, dreampop
RECORD LABEL : self-released

This is a wonderful vaporwavey/shoegazey album from Californian solo artist Menthol. Ideal for staring at the stars and completely zoning out. It's smooth, dreamy, floaty and nostalgic. I don't know the story behind this music, or the artist, but that doesn't really matter. This album is a really cool random discovery for me, and I want you to listen to it.

City of Dawn - Where The World Quietly Sing Their Song (2021)

GENRE : ambient, drone, instrumental, post-rock
RECORD LABEL : El Gran E Records

El Gran E Records state on their Bandcamp bio that they're ''bringing you music you didn't know you needed''. Even though this is the first and only release I've listened to of theirs - that statement certainly rings true for this album. I needed it without knowing I did.

The world is in a terrible way right now, and we could all definitely use some emotional and spiritual healing. This album definitely helps with that. City of Dawn is the instrumental ambient/drone project of Damian Duque. He creates beautiful sweeping melancholic soundscapes that shimmers and swells all around you. Inspired by 'Lost In Translation' (one of my all-time favourite movies!), this album is a glorious eruption of beautiful ambient noise. Great meditative healing music for these dark and troubled times.

Isnaj Dui - Abstractions on Solitude (2012)

GENRE : electronic, ambient, electro-acoustic, minimalist
RECORD LABEL : Hibernate Recordings

Isnaj Dui (aka Katie English) is a minimalist composer that makes beautiful instrumental music using flutes, dulcimer and an array of different electronic gear. She has released a number of albums, but I decided to click on this one, purely because the title was calling me. It's a wonderful album in which atmospheric flutes and dulcimers ebb and flow and sweep and soar over abstract electronic glitches, creating this rich dreamy organic ambience. Everything about this music is understated and minimalistic, meditative and slow. I'm looking forward to checking out the rest of her releases sometime.

Taken from her Bandcamp page...

''It is within these subtle electronic glitches that the album's beauty can be found, as restrained shards of noise, circuit boards, reverb and light rest comfortably on a soft and atmospheric bed created by the acoustic instrument sounds.''

Julia Gjertsen - Formations (2022)

GENRE : modern classical, cinematic, electronica, ambient, instrumental, Norway,
RECORD LABEL : Moderna Records

Moderna Records are a Canadian record label that specialize in all kinds of beautiful modern classical music, and ambient music. I clicked on this album simply because it was the newest album on their Bandcamp page...

'Formations' by Norwegian composer Julia Gjertsen is a breathtaking magical work of art. The central focus of this album is the beautiful rhythmic piano playing, which is both repetitive yet constantly shifting and building towards huge glorious cinematic crescendos, backed by ambient textured electronics, sweeping string sections and soft flutes. A wonderful introspective modern classical album. It makes me think of drifting clouds and waterfalls. I love it.

Naono - Sleepy Pebbles (2010)

GENRE : ambient, electronica, dub, downtempo, Greece
RECORD LABEL : self-released

If you're looking for some healing ambient electronica to soothe your soul, here's a lovely little gem of an album you should check out.

Naono is the solo music project of Tony Ambito from Greece. 'Sleepy Pebbles' dates back to 2010, and I don't even know if Naono is still releasing music, but he did a great job of this particular album. It has soft dub beats, sleepy nature noises and dreamy synth melodies floating and dancing through the air. Ideal daytime ambient music for meditating, being out in nature, or simply just kicking back and relaxing at home. And it's a FREE download. Go get it.

Monte Burrows - The Concentration of Brown Owls (2016)

GENRE : avant-garde, experimental, field recordings, ambient, drone, noise
RECORD LABEL : Dinzu Artefacts

Dinzu Artefacts have some of the most pleasing visual aesthetics of any record label I know. Their cassette tape artworks are simply gorgeous. Musically... ''Dinzu Artefacts is focused on the contemporary art of sound by musicians interested in experimental practices, modern composition, improvised music, noise and field recordings''. I plan on gradually making my way through all their releases in time, but for now let's start than from the beginning...

This album by Monte Burrows was the first release on Dinzu Artefacts. It's an odd but beautiful amalgamation of birdsong, nature sounds, mechanical drones, industrial noises, and even a bit of gorgeous neo-classical piano thrown into the mix. A great release from a great record label. I look forward to investigating more.

Hydrangea - Escape From Reality (2015)

GENRE : ambient, techno, deep techno, electronic, drone, France
RECORD LABEL : self-released

Hydrangea is a solo multi-instrumentalist musician from France, and this 2015 album of hers is a beautiful heartfelt musical tribute to her sister who passed away. I admittedly know very little about techno music, but I do know how this album made me feel, and that's all that really matters to me as a music listener. It's deep and dark and wonderful. Infectious deep techno beats, rich swirling ambience and organic nature sounds create this gorgeous introspective work of art. It feels like some sort of spiritual catharsis. A desperate longing for light. I love it.

Mollbury Medical Research Centre - The D7 Project (2022)

GENRE : experimental, avant-garde, noise, drone, sci-fi, ambient, medical science
RECORD LABEL : self-released

This is one of the most disturbing and unsettling albums I've ever listened to. What scares me most is what's NOT being said here. It's what is possibly implied by the song titles/sounds/atmospheres that really disturb me.

I don't know what Mollbury Medical Research Centre is exactly, and I don't think I want to know... but artistically it's an experimental, avant-garde, dark ambient drone project with all kinds of eerie unsettling futuristic sci-fi soundscapes mixed with creepy field recordings. And it's f**king awesome.

Scott Orr - Worried Mind (2018)

GENRE : alternative folk, electronica, soul, dream pop, ambient,
RECORD LABEL : Other Songs

Scott Orr is a songwriter, musician and podcaster from Ontario, Canada. He is also the founder/owner of Other Songs record label. 'Worried Mind' isn't his latest release, but it's the release I wanted to plug and promote on this particular occasion. It's a wonderful album. The central focus of the songs are his beautiful hushed vocals and delicate acoustic guitar picking...surrounded by shimmering ambience, glistening synthesizers, simple programmed beats, tinkly piano notes, glitchy electronics and dreamy backing vocals. A truly relaxing listening experience during these difficult times. Fans of Bon Iver and Radiohead will very likely dig this album.

Also check out his cool little record label Other Songs and his wonderful podcast Other Record Labels, available to listen to on Spotify.

Hainbach - Home Stories (2021)

GENRE : ambient, cosmic disco, experimental, electronic, techno
RECORD LABEL : Seil Records

I randomly chose this album/artist to listen to while I was investigating the Seil Records Bandcamp page. It was the artwork that did it for me. I was drawn to the satellites. I have a thing about satellites...

Anyway, Heinbach is a music composer/performer based in Berlin, Germany that uses piano, synthesizers, nuclear test equipment (!), magnetic tape and idiophones to create wonderful electro-acoustic ambient music. 'Home Stories' is the only album of his I've listened to so far, and it's a beauty. Clicking play, I was instantly sucked into a sublime sonic soundscape of beautiful swirling ambience, tinkly piano notes and deep bass electronic pulses that constantly shift and change throughout the tracks. It's introspective ambient music that never becomes dull or overly predictable. I'm looking forward to checking out his other works, and more of the Seil Records catalog.

Old Amica - Constellations (2019)

GENRE : alternative folk, indie rock, ambient, dream pop, bedroom pop
RECORD LABEL : Fox Food Records

This album was my introduction to the fantastic Fox Food Records label. I randomly found it in the Bandcamp recommendations section and was sold in seconds. I don't know anything about this band other than they're a Swedish bedroom pop duo. I don't really need to know anything else, to be honest. All I know is that they write beautiful, sweeping, ethereal, sparkly bedroom pop that makes me think of snowy mountain peaks and cold rivers.

If you like this album, you should dive into the Fox Food Records label Bandcamp page and feast upon its glorious contents.

Grouper - Shade (2021)

GENRE : experimental pop, ambient, singer-songwriter, noise, drone
RECORD LABEL : Kranky

Grouper is the music project of experimental songwriter/musician Liz Harris. Her latest release is 'Shade', and it's my personal favourite work of hers to date. Beautiful, bare, stripped-down, sleepy, introspective folk music mixed with tape loops and ambient noise experimentations. It's almost unbearably raw and intimate, with room sounds, squeaky fret noises and owls hooting in the background. I personally hope she releases more albums like this.
