Liebeskid - Silvery Clear and Snow (2021)

GENRE : singer-songwriter, dark pop, downtempo, dark ambient, trip-hop, Germany
RECORD LABEL : self-released

Liebeskid is a solo music project of Anja Nischwitz - a Russian songwriter living in Germany. I randomly came across this song while I was trawling through Bandcamp. It's a slow dark haunting ballad that makes me feel like I'm dissolving. The song is driven by dramatic tremolo'd keyboards, and backed perfectly with bursts of pulsing dark trip-hop electronics, and Nischwitz's beautiful accented vocals centered down the middle of the mix. A lovely winter song. She has a bunch of other songs/releases on Bandcamp too. Go check them out.

Cop Funeral - Pain (2021)

GENRE : harsh noise, noise, experimental, electronic, industrial
RECORD LABEL : Already Dead Tapes & Records

Cop Funeral is the dark noise music project of Joshua Tabbia, who also runs the quirky and amazing record label Already Dead Tapes & Records. This is his second album, and it's not for the faint of heart. It's dark, brutal, unnerving...and brilliant.

As it states on the Bandcamp page, ''Nothing represented here is the soundtrack to one's daily activities. No, this is what it sounds like to escape the social structure, either by transcending it or destroying it.'' I couldn't agree more. It's bleak and painful, but it's also a cathartic and rewarding listening experience. Even though I would definitely file this under ''harsh noise'', it's definitely not a one-dimensional album...there's strangely calm and tranquil moments throughout. There's even saxophone on one of the songs, and some mellow abstract electronic interludes. Awesome stuff. Fans of Prurient and Merzbow would very likely dig this.

City of Dawn - Where The World Quietly Sing Their Song (2021)

GENRE : ambient, drone, instrumental, post-rock
RECORD LABEL : El Gran E Records

El Gran E Records state on their Bandcamp bio that they're ''bringing you music you didn't know you needed''. Even though this is the first and only release I've listened to of theirs - that statement certainly rings true for this album. I needed it without knowing I did.

The world is in a terrible way right now, and we could all definitely use some emotional and spiritual healing. This album definitely helps with that. City of Dawn is the instrumental ambient/drone project of Damian Duque. He creates beautiful sweeping melancholic soundscapes that shimmers and swells all around you. Inspired by 'Lost In Translation' (one of my all-time favourite movies!), this album is a glorious eruption of beautiful ambient noise. Great meditative healing music for these dark and troubled times.

Isnaj Dui - Abstractions on Solitude (2012)

GENRE : electronic, ambient, electro-acoustic, minimalist
RECORD LABEL : Hibernate Recordings

Isnaj Dui (aka Katie English) is a minimalist composer that makes beautiful instrumental music using flutes, dulcimer and an array of different electronic gear. She has released a number of albums, but I decided to click on this one, purely because the title was calling me. It's a wonderful album in which atmospheric flutes and dulcimers ebb and flow and sweep and soar over abstract electronic glitches, creating this rich dreamy organic ambience. Everything about this music is understated and minimalistic, meditative and slow. I'm looking forward to checking out the rest of her releases sometime.

Taken from her Bandcamp page...

''It is within these subtle electronic glitches that the album's beauty can be found, as restrained shards of noise, circuit boards, reverb and light rest comfortably on a soft and atmospheric bed created by the acoustic instrument sounds.''

Fall Town - After The Crash (2021)

GENRE : alternative punk, power pop, alternative rock, dream pop, shoegaze, post-punk
RECORD LABEL : Dead Forest Records

Fall Town are a band you've almost definitely never heard of. They're an alternative punk band from Scotland, and this is their phenomenal (yet sinfully ignored) debut album, 'After The Crash'. It's a dark, powerful, introspective journey. One of these albums that's all over before you know it, and you're left wanting more...

Fall Town's sound is a unique amalgamation of dark post-punk, power pop, alt-rock and shoegaze. A perfect soundtrack to driving down dark highways, or running away from home. There's a real sadness to this album, yet at the same time it's fun and energetic, and catchy as hell. This band needs a lot more love than they're getting. You should give this one a blast.

Here's the album blurb taken from their Bandcamp page, which totally nails it...

Fall Town comes roaring from bare, rocky, isolated islands to unleash a debut album overflowing with passion, rage, sweetness and melancholy. Huge riffs collide with soaring melodies like storm-raised waves battering cliffs in a push and pull that mirrors the anger, joy and loss of the human condition.

Somehow Fall Town has managed to create a debut that sounds as fresh as these energies did when they were first unleashed somewhere in the history of rock music. 'After The Crash' is a must-listen for lovers of meaningful music that evokes profound emotions. It also kicks ass.

Julia Gjertsen - Formations (2022)

GENRE : modern classical, cinematic, electronica, ambient, instrumental, Norway,
RECORD LABEL : Moderna Records

Moderna Records are a Canadian record label that specialize in all kinds of beautiful modern classical music, and ambient music. I clicked on this album simply because it was the newest album on their Bandcamp page...

'Formations' by Norwegian composer Julia Gjertsen is a breathtaking magical work of art. The central focus of this album is the beautiful rhythmic piano playing, which is both repetitive yet constantly shifting and building towards huge glorious cinematic crescendos, backed by ambient textured electronics, sweeping string sections and soft flutes. A wonderful introspective modern classical album. It makes me think of drifting clouds and waterfalls. I love it.

Tidiane Thiam - Siftorde (2020)

GENRE : African guitar, world, minimalist folk
RECORD LABEL : Sahel Sounds

Tidiane Thiam is a Senegalese musician, folklorist, photographer and artist from Podor - a small riverside town in the North of Senegal. Inspired by a deep knowledge and understanding of Sahel folklore and borrowing from ancient melodies, Tidiane Thiam plays beautiful finger-picked minimalist African folk guitar music. Recorded at night at his home in Podor using a single microphone against the backdrop of crickets and other night sounds, this is deep reflective music for the soul. Enjoy.

Rare/Obscure 70's Psych Folk

I love 70's psych folk, especially the darker stuff. I love 70's everything for that matter. We all know Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Simon & Garfunkel, Joan Baez, Vashti Bunyan, Cat Stevens, etc... who are all great folk artists, and I'm not taking anything away from them, but you can find their music anywhere and everywhere, even if you're not looking for it.

I wanted to compile a list of great 70's psych folk albums/songs that most people probably haven't heard of - artists that seem to have disappeared into the mists of time...

---

Linda Perhacs - Parallelograms (1970)

Linda Perhacs is an American psychedelic folk singer. This is her debut album, which was originally released in 1970 to scant notice, sales or attention. It was rediscovered in the late 1990s by record enthusiasts on the internet, and since then it's been steadily gaining more popularity, but still mostly unknown.

Michael Yonkers & Jim Woehrle - Borders of my Mind (1973)

I love Michael Yonkers, but he's a strange one. I considered not including any of his music in this post because he's strayed into various non-folky musical directions. He's done a goofy oddball country album, a instrumental harsh guitar noise album, etc... but some of his best material can definitely be placed pretty comfortably in the psych folk category. This is a really good album - a duo record with his friend Jim Woehrle. It's touching and strange and funny. The songs often ending in bursts of laughter.

Sparrow - Wings of the Morning (1977)

Sparrow was a Christian folk duo from the '70s, consisting of David Shwan and Greg Zornes. This is their only album.

Nigel Planer - Five Songs Left (1971)

Nigel Planer wrote this album when he was eighteen years old, back in '77. It's raw and primitive and really damn good. Later in life he went onto become an actor, a writer and a comedian.

Keith Christmas - Fable of the Wings (1970)

Keith Christmas has had a very impressive career, spanning over 50 years. He's recorded multiple albums, toured all over the world, and played acoustic guitar on David Bowie's 'Space Oddity' album. This is his classic 1970 solo album.

Catherine Howe - What A Beautiful Place (1971)

This album is the Brit folk autobiography of Catherine Hower, who was aged 20 at the time of its recording. She never made it as a breakout success, or anywhere near as big as she deserved, but she certainly had a devoted cult following. If you're looking for beautiful, jazzy, orchestral, pastoral folk... then this album is for you.

Gaynor Jenkins - Selected Short Stories (1972/1973)

Gaynor Jenkins is sadly no longer with us, but her music lives on, thanks to her sons Aiden and Dorian. The recordings that comprise this album were unearthed 50 years after they were recorded, back in '72 and '73, mostly at the University of Kent, where Jenkins was studying at age 25. I'm so glad these recordings were eventually shared.

Caedmon - Caedmon (1978)

Caedmon were a Scottish folk rock band from the '70s. This eponymous debut album was a cult hit back in '78. Only 500 copies of it were originally made, before it was eventually released out into the world. I'm not sure when that was, but here it is...

---

FURTHER LISTENING...

Here are a bunch of individual 70s psych folk songs that I love, but wasn't able to locate the digital albums they were taken from anywhere online, therefore couldn't embed them on this post. All these songs are gorgeous. I never get sick of these forgotten gems.

Folque - Harpa

Kevin Coyne - I'm Just A Man

Evensong - Dodos & Dinosaurs

Harris - Wishes

Lily & Maria - I Was

Michael Yonkers - Will It Be

The Growing Concern - Hard Hard Year

Les Jardin Des Plaisirs - Ripaille

Wolverlei - Scheepjes over Zee / Boerenmai

Tarentule - Au Sainte-Nau/Noël Anglais

Naono - Sleepy Pebbles (2010)

GENRE : ambient, electronica, dub, downtempo, Greece
RECORD LABEL : self-released

If you're looking for some healing ambient electronica to soothe your soul, here's a lovely little gem of an album you should check out.

Naono is the solo music project of Tony Ambito from Greece. 'Sleepy Pebbles' dates back to 2010, and I don't even know if Naono is still releasing music, but he did a great job of this particular album. It has soft dub beats, sleepy nature noises and dreamy synth melodies floating and dancing through the air. Ideal daytime ambient music for meditating, being out in nature, or simply just kicking back and relaxing at home. And it's a FREE download. Go get it.

Amiga Herz - Adapting To Blurriness (2021)

GENRE : indie folk, bedroom pop, emo, alternative folk, acoustic, Germany
RECORD LABEL : Z Tapes

I was having a sad Sunday morning, casually browsing through the Z Tapes Bandcamp page, not knowing who or what I was going to click on. For some reason the artwork and the title of this particular release drew me in...

It's the second album by German singer-songwriter, Amiga Herz. Listening to it from start to finish, I was taken on a quiet introspective journey through a blurry landscape. Entering it alone, and emerging from it alone. It was a sad but gorgeous listening experience. Acoustic emo at its finest.

If you like this album, you should definitely look into the Z Tapes Bandcamp page. You won't regret it.

Sandpit - On Second Thought (1994-1998)

GENRE : alternative punk, slowcore, alternative rock, shoegaze, Australia
RECORD LABEL : Fellaheen Records

Sandpit are a band that you've probably never heard of. They're an Australian alternative rock trio that were mainly active between 1994-1998. This is the only album of theirs I've listened to, and it's really damn good. They instantly brought to mind bands like Sonic Youth, Codeine, Dinosaur Jr and Red House Painters. They have that unmistakable 90's shoegaze thing to them too.

Sandpit play slow, raw, broody alt-punk with weird-ass guitar chords in weird-ass tunings, which gets shockingly loud and heavy at times. If (like me) you're into that kind of thing, you should definitely check them out.

Pushflowers - Close For Comfort (2019)

GENRE : indie pop, indie rock, power pop, fuzz rock,
RECORD LABEL : Forged Artifacts

Here's a cool power pop record from the amazing Forged Artifacts record label. Pushflowers are pure fuzzy pop goodness. They have a thundering rhythm section, unique dual guitar chords/melodies that never get dull or predictable, and beautiful vocals layered over the top. This band have an interesting thing going on - their music sounds like it was largely influenced by punk and post-hardcore and (dare I say) grunge...but the vocals sound very pop influenced. The singer's voice reminds me of certain contemporary pop singers like Morgan Kibby (White Sea) and Danielle Haim (Haim). I dig it very much. This is an awesome EP.

John Carpenter - Anthology (Movie Themes 1974-1998)

GENRE : soundtrack, electronic, minimal synth, horror, rock
RECORD LABEL : self-released

John Carpenter is incredible filmmaker. He's responsible for making some of the most iconic horror movies of all time - Halloween, The Thing, The Fog, Assault on Precinct 13, etc... but he's also an incredible musician/composer, and wrote these dark minimalistic synth soundtracks for most of his own movies. All his music is now up on Bandcamp, so go check it out.

Monte Burrows - The Concentration of Brown Owls (2016)

GENRE : avant-garde, experimental, field recordings, ambient, drone, noise
RECORD LABEL : Dinzu Artefacts

Dinzu Artefacts have some of the most pleasing visual aesthetics of any record label I know. Their cassette tape artworks are simply gorgeous. Musically... ''Dinzu Artefacts is focused on the contemporary art of sound by musicians interested in experimental practices, modern composition, improvised music, noise and field recordings''. I plan on gradually making my way through all their releases in time, but for now let's start than from the beginning...

This album by Monte Burrows was the first release on Dinzu Artefacts. It's an odd but beautiful amalgamation of birdsong, nature sounds, mechanical drones, industrial noises, and even a bit of gorgeous neo-classical piano thrown into the mix. A great release from a great record label. I look forward to investigating more.

Renée Reed - J’ai rêvé EP (2021)

GENRE : dream folk, indie folk, dream pop, Cajun, singer-songwriter, acoustic
RECORD LABEL : Keeled Scales

Straight from the prairies, this is a wonderful little fantasy folk EP by Cajun songwriter Renée Reed. It consists of two English language originals and two French cover songs. Instantly her voice reminds me of Hope Sandoval (one of my all-time favourite singers) and 60's French pop extraordinaire Francoise Hardy. These 4 songs are languid and dreamy. It brings to mind hazy summer fields and sweet birdsong, daydreaming amongst the flowers.

After writing this I realized that this EP is actually an accompaniment to her self-titled debut album, which I haven't listened to yet. I was tempted to scrap this write-up and review her full-length album instead, but then I figured that this EP could use some love as a stand-alone release. Why not? I love EPs, and you should definitely give this one a spin. Or at least a good old click.

Kids On A Crime Spree - Fall In Love Not In Line (2022)

GENRE : power pop, indie rock, pop punk, post-punk, noise pop
RECORD LABEL : Slumberland Records

Here's a high-octane blistering noise pop album from Oakland trio Kids On A Crime Spree. I'm personally not familiar with their previous work, but from what I've read they kept their fans waiting a looong time for this release. 11 years, to be precise!

Anyway, this is a fantastic album. I hear infectious 60's pop melodies, 70's Spector-esque echo chamber production, 80's post-punk instrumentation, and 90's noisy shoegaze in their sound. It's a joyous collision of many things that I love from different decades of music. The guitars are simultaneously jangly and fuzzy, the basslines are fierce yet melodic, the drums are thunderous and mean, and the vocals cut through the noisy reverb-soaked mix quite beautifully.

I think this band would appeal to fans of The Feelies, My Bloody Valentine, The Ramones, Joy Division and 60's pop music. Give it a listen. And while you're at it, you should have a browse through the Slumberland Records Bandcamp page. There's great stuff on there.

Hydrangea - Escape From Reality (2015)

GENRE : ambient, techno, deep techno, electronic, drone, France
RECORD LABEL : self-released

Hydrangea is a solo multi-instrumentalist musician from France, and this 2015 album of hers is a beautiful heartfelt musical tribute to her sister who passed away. I admittedly know very little about techno music, but I do know how this album made me feel, and that's all that really matters to me as a music listener. It's deep and dark and wonderful. Infectious deep techno beats, rich swirling ambience and organic nature sounds create this gorgeous introspective work of art. It feels like some sort of spiritual catharsis. A desperate longing for light. I love it.

Sizzlebird - Clear Waters (2017)

GENRE : electronic, dubstep, chillwave, , dance
RECORD LABEL : Handle With Care

I can't remember how I came across Sizzlebird and this particular release of his, but I did, and I'm glad I did. 'Clear Waters' consists of two gorgeous pieces of dance-y yet soothing electronic goodness, with beautiful violin and piano adding wonderful colour and texture to the songs. A truly calming listening experience. I'm looking forward to checking out more of Sizzlebird's work.

Lola Pistola - Lizard EP (2020)

GENRE : alternative grunge, alternative rock, punk, rock n roll
RECORD LABEL : self-released

Crushing is the word that instantly came into my head when I heard this, and the same word that remained in my head after the four songs were over. This is heavy, ballsy, thunderous rock n' roll that not only shakes the walls - it destroys the walls.

Lola Pistola is a two-person alt-grunge rock n roll band, consisting Brooklyn-based songwriter/musician Lola Pistola on vocals/guitars, and Robert Preston Collum on drums. I'd personally like to hear some bass in this band, but it's certainly awesome as is. The vocals are fierce yet melodic, and the instrumentation is intensely heavy. I love it.

I think that fans of Torche, Kyuss and P.J Harvey will dig this EP.

Western Skies Motel - Reflections EP (2014)

GENRE : experimental, electro-acoustic, ambient folk, drone, Denmark
RECORD LABEL : Audio Gourmet

Western Skies Motel is the solo music project of Danish multi-instrumentalist Rene Schelbeck, and this is his debut EP, 'Reflections'. I originally discovered Western Skies Motel through the now-defunct music blog Make Your Own Taste, quite a number of years back. I was immediately intrigued by the project name and artwork, and knew I had to check it out. I'm so glad I did...

It's a perfect soundtrack for driving down dark deserted highways at night, seeing all the passing streetlights blur and flicker through the spattering raindrops on your windshield. I used to listen to this EP a lot while driving home from sad lonely night shifts, contemplating my own existence...

The central focus of the songs is Rene's beautiful lush acoustic Americana-style finger-picking, accompanied by dark metallic drones that create these rich dreamy textures, making the whole thing very tense and atmospheric from start to finish. I'd recommend checking out all his work, but I think this EP is a good starting point. It's a beautiful taster of what's to come.

Mark Lanegan & Kurt Cobain - Where Did You Sleep Last Night? (Leadbelly cover)

GENRE
: grunge, alternative rock, acoustic, blues, cover

RECORD LABEL : Sub Pop Records

As far as I know, this is the only recording that Kurt Cobain has appeared on outside of Nirvana. It's a  fantastic dark blues rock song.

It's taken from Mark Lanegan's wonderfully miserable debut album, 'The Winding Sheet', which you can stream/download below...

Mollbury Medical Research Centre - The D7 Project (2022)

GENRE : experimental, avant-garde, noise, drone, sci-fi, ambient, medical science
RECORD LABEL : self-released

This is one of the most disturbing and unsettling albums I've ever listened to. What scares me most is what's NOT being said here. It's what is possibly implied by the song titles/sounds/atmospheres that really disturb me.

I don't know what Mollbury Medical Research Centre is exactly, and I don't think I want to know... but artistically it's an experimental, avant-garde, dark ambient drone project with all kinds of eerie unsettling futuristic sci-fi soundscapes mixed with creepy field recordings. And it's f**king awesome.

Lisa/Liza - Forgotten Sings EP (2021)

GENRE : experimental folk, bedroom pop, psychedelic folk, freak folk
RECORD LABEL : Orindal Records

Lisa/Liza is the solo experimental folk music project of Lisa Victoria Miller from Portland, Maine. This EP is...strange. As suggested in her Bandcamp blurb, I listened to it through earphones...

Weird chorus-y acoustic guitars swirl in my head, while her beautiful voice floats in and out of focus, echoing and blipping (is that a word?) from ear to ear... a confusing yet strangely beautiful listening experience. This EP did something to my head, but I don't know what.

Lisa/Liza is one of many interesting artists on the Orindal Records. You should have a browse through their Bandcamp page.

Scott Orr - Worried Mind (2018)

GENRE : alternative folk, electronica, soul, dream pop, ambient,
RECORD LABEL : Other Songs

Scott Orr is a songwriter, musician and podcaster from Ontario, Canada. He is also the founder/owner of Other Songs record label. 'Worried Mind' isn't his latest release, but it's the release I wanted to plug and promote on this particular occasion. It's a wonderful album. The central focus of the songs are his beautiful hushed vocals and delicate acoustic guitar picking...surrounded by shimmering ambience, glistening synthesizers, simple programmed beats, tinkly piano notes, glitchy electronics and dreamy backing vocals. A truly relaxing listening experience during these difficult times. Fans of Bon Iver and Radiohead will very likely dig this album.

Shelley Short - Pacific City (2017)

GENRE : alternative country, folk
RECORD LABEL : Mississippi Records

This was one of these albums that only took the first few seconds of the opening song to convince me to buy it. The album consists of a bunch of gentle laid-back country songs that are simultaneously playful and sad. The music is very intimate and acoustic-based, centered around guitars and pianos, but it's cleverly broken up with a couple of atmospheric ambient pieces, so it never gets dull or repetitive.
Though there's obviously great musicianship on the album, Shelley's beautiful voice is undoubtedly the selling point for me. It's one of these albums that just makes me want to get in my car and head to the beach and stare at the sea for a while. A lovely album for lazy sunny days. Mississippi Records are doing God's work.

Feast of Smoke (2021)

GENRE : psychadelic blues, freak folk, psychadelic rock, alternative, indie rock, dark pop
RECORD LABEL : Perpetual Doom

Feast of Smoke is the husband/wife duo of Paul & Amber Oldham, and this is their fantastic debut record. They managed to merge ghostly psychadelic blues with whispered downtempo folk, dirty punk riffage and straight-up rock n roll. To steal a quote from the music website Raven Sings The Blues  - ''This record is both intimate and aloof'''. I think that description nails the vibe. In fact, I find quite a lot of interesting juxtaposition going on in this record. It's dirty and beautiful, weird and wonderful, comforting and eerie, haunting and reticent, joyful and depressing... even the way both their voices seem to float in and out of tune, but somehow create a great overall tone.

I was anticipating the release of this album for what seems like forever. I can't explain why I was getting so impatient and desperate...I just was. It was a shitty year, and something about this album convinced me that I was going to love it. Maybe it was a combination of the artwork and Perpetual Doom's great promo work...I don't know, but it felt like months of unbearable torture. When it finally came out, I played the shit out of it, mostly during pitch black commutes to and from work. The songs are cool and comforting, yet they also make me feel kind of sick and anxious. I love it though, and I'd highly recommend it. I really hope this great musical duo release more in the future.

Sock Jock - Well (2021)

GENRE : indie rock, indie pop, pop rock, power pop, bedroom pop
RECORD LABEL : Totally Real Records

Sock Jock is Taylor Marie - a young songwriter/musician from the suburbs of Chicago. 'Well' is her lovely debut album. It's a delicious slice of pop rock pie. Just listen to it. If you don't at least like the song 'better' then there's something seriously wrong with you. I don't dance but it makes me want to try.

Also, Totally Real Records is a cool little record label. If you like Sock Jock, you should definitely check out their other artists and support them.

The Knee-His - Action! (2021)

GENRE : power pop, pop punk, punk, rock n roll, vintage rock
RECORD LABEL : self-released

I'm a sucker for good power-pop bands, especially female power-pop bands. The Knee-His are a cool 4-piece band from Chicago, and whilst I don't think they're going to win any prizes for originality, they should win all the prizes for awesomeness. They write simple, infectious rock n roll power-pop goodness.

I loved the two individual songs they've released on Bandcamp so far, and I can see on their social media pages that their debut full-length album is on its way! The world needs more bands like The Knee-His.

The Tacks - s/t EP (2020)

GENRE : post-punk, death rock, alternative rock, punk, goth rock
RECORD LABEL : Dust Up! Records

I can't remember exactly how I stumbled upon this band. It was definitely a Bandcamp recommendation...but I can't remember the specifics. Regardless, this was an awesome find. The Tacks are a post-punk/goth rock band from New Zealand. They're dark, raw, noisy and lo-fi, perfect for cassette. I hear blatant 80's new wave influences on their sound (Siouxie & The Banshees, Joy Division, The Cure, All About Eve, etc...) along with more modern punk rock influences. It's a unique take on a very familiar sound. I love it, and I'm looking forward to hearing more.

Hainbach - Home Stories (2021)

GENRE : ambient, cosmic disco, experimental, electronic, techno
RECORD LABEL : Seil Records

I randomly chose this album/artist to listen to while I was investigating the Seil Records Bandcamp page. It was the artwork that did it for me. I was drawn to the satellites. I have a thing about satellites...

Anyway, Heinbach is a music composer/performer based in Berlin, Germany that uses piano, synthesizers, nuclear test equipment (!), magnetic tape and idiophones to create wonderful electro-acoustic ambient music. 'Home Stories' is the only album of his I've listened to so far, and it's a beauty. Clicking play, I was instantly sucked into a sublime sonic soundscape of beautiful swirling ambience, tinkly piano notes and deep bass electronic pulses that constantly shift and change throughout the tracks. It's introspective ambient music that never becomes dull or overly predictable. I'm looking forward to checking out his other works, and more of the Seil Records catalog.

Further Seems Forever - The Moon Is Down (2001)

GENRE : emo, post-hardcore, alternative rock, alternative punk
RECORD LABEL : Tooth & Nail Records

A few summers ago a had a massive doomed crush on someone I barely knew. My chest was all knots and my stomach was butterflies. I was physically and mentally sick, unable to focus or think about anyone else, or anything else. I was in between jobs and spent most of that summer doing nothing but riding my bike around my local area, listening to sad music and staring off into space, living in my own head, feeling like this one person alone held the key to my heart. I had been lonely for so long, and I had built this person up in my head (without really knowing them at all) to such a ridiculous degree that it was inevitably going to end in big fat disappointment, which it certainly did...

Anyway, one of the albums that was in heavy rotation during that sad lonely summer was 'The Moon Is Down' by emo/post-hardcore/alt-punk band Further Seems Forever. It is their debut album and some die hard fans claim that it's their best work. To be honest, I don't really know where I stand on that whole thing personally. I'm a fan of all four of their studio albums. I'd say that 'Hide Nothing' is probably my least favourite, but I still like it. The other three albums I love equally, and refuse to choose a favourite. All I know is that 'The Moon Is Down' is a great starting point, and their album that I have the most emotional attachment to. FSF fans also like to get into heated debates over which of their 3 singers were the best - Chris Carraba, Jason Gleason or Jon Bunch.  It's such a subjective thing, I refuse to even get into that.

Anyway, returning to my little emo story - one day I was cycling along some quiet little street, listening to 'The Moon Is Down' (specifically track 4 - Monachetti), this person I'd been dreaming about all summer drove past me, smiling and waving! My legs turned to jelly and I fell off my bike, into a ditch. After a few minutes I was able to get up and cycle home, smiling like a clown. Heart thumping uncontrollably. It was a sweet moment in an otherwise miserable summer.

I won't go into the specifics about what happened from there, and how this person eventually revealed themselves be a disgusting snake, but I will say that this album helped me get through a really tough period in my life, and I will always love FSF for that.

Anyway, listen to this album. You can stream/download/buy all of their music on all the usual digital music platforms - Spotify, iTunes, etc... and rumour has it they're working on new material! I don't know if that's true. I really hope it is.

Charlotte Carpenter - Blood Ties pt.2 (2018)

GENRE : alternative rock, alternative folk, singer-songwriter, indie rock, indie folk, alternative folk
RECORD LABEL : Babywoman Records

I first became aware of English songwriter/musician Charlotte Carpenter via the podcast appearance she did on The Subliminally Inevitable Show, where she discussed her record label Babywoman Records and her own personal story as a DIY songwriter, musician, and entrepreneur. I really enjoyed listening to what she had to say. She seemed like a cool, sweet, fiercely independent woman that's wise beyond her years, and works really damn hard to carve out her own little niche in the big bad world of music. I knew I had to check her music out, and her record label.

Her songs generally tend to fluctuate between raw powerful alt-rock and delicate acoustic indie folk. Regardless of what musical direction she chooses to explore, she always packs a hard punch.
'Blood Ties pt.2' isn't one of her newer singles, but who cares. It's an unsettling yet beautiful reflection on the nature of loss and grief, and how these terrible but inevitable human experiences affect relationships.

Charlotte is currently working on her debut full-length album, which I'm looking forward to hearing.

Old Amica - Constellations (2019)

GENRE : alternative folk, indie rock, ambient, dream pop, bedroom pop
RECORD LABEL : Fox Food Records

This album was my introduction to the fantastic Fox Food Records label. I randomly found it in the Bandcamp recommendations section and was sold in seconds. I don't know anything about this band other than they're a Swedish bedroom pop duo. I don't really need to know anything else, to be honest. All I know is that they write beautiful, sweeping, ethereal, sparkly bedroom pop that makes me think of snowy mountain peaks and cold rivers.

If you like this album, you should dive into the Fox Food Records label Bandcamp page and feast upon its glorious contents.
